One Year of Blogging
Reflections on my first year of writing a knitting blog
1/19/20262 min read
It’s been a year since I started blogging, and I wanted to take some time to reflect on what it’s meant to me, and how all of you have helped me continue.
Why I Started Blogging
I started blogging because I love knitting so much, and I really wanted to share that passion with my online community. I decided to get more serious about my knitting journey and start an actual business. In the past, I had sold a few handmade items on Etsy, but I found keeping up an inventory difficult, and didn’t get many sales. About a year and a half ago, I learned that tech editing is a way to earn money with knitting, and wanted to try it out for myself. Since then, I have been certified as a tech editor, and have explored other ways of turning knitting into a career. Writing a blog seemed like a great idea to share my ideas for free with a diverse group of knitters of all skill levels.
Popular Topics
I have written about so many knitting topics over the last year! Some of my most popular blog posts have been pattern roundups (found here, here, and here). I love sharing some of my favorite patterns with you all, and helping out some fellow designers in the process. My confessions of a yarn hoarder post really resonated with a lot of you, and to be perfectly honest, I am STILL going through my stash since writing that post, it’s been a slow process! The post on colorwork techniques was another popular one, as I explored various uses of color in knitting. I hope it inspired some of you to try something new!
What I've Learned
While doing research for some of my blog posts, I have definitely come across techniques and methods I was not aware of before. I have learned so many little tips and tricks, and I love being able to share them with all of you. Sitting down to explain techniques in ways that will resonate with many different people also has helped me deepen my understanding of knitting. Before I started my blog, most of the writing I had done was very technical, seeing as I have a background in science. Writing the blog has such a different feel to it, and it has taught me a lot about writing conversationally. I try not to be “informal” per se, but my blog writing is definitely closer to how I speak than much of my other writing.
Community and Connection
I absolutely love hearing from my readers! I love when you have questions or comments about my blog posts. Getting actual replies has really helped me stay consistent with writing every week. It shows me that you all value what I have to say, and it helps me with ideas for new blog posts. I am so thankful for my readers, even if you don’t reach out to me, I appreciate all of you being here!
Looking Ahead
I have had a lot of fun writing this blog in the last year, and I’m looking forward to writing more and sharing my passion for knitting this year. I have a lot of ideas for new posts that I think you will truly enjoy. I think I will include some more advanced techniques, as I was mostly focused on new knitters in my how-to blog posts in the last year. I would love to reach a wider audience and help more people in their knitting journey. If there are any topics you particularly want to hear about, please let me know using the form below! I appreciate all of your feedback, questions, and ideas. As always, happy stitching!
